The Juju hat is found throughout Cameroon and was traditionally worn as part of the costume of the royal dancers.

We pride ourselves on beautiful feathers with illustrious, full plumes. The owner of African Luxe hand selects each headdress, oversees the fumigation process, and ensures they are to the highest standard. We have been told by all who have purchased one of our coveted feathered headdresses that our feathers, from roosters, are rich and saturated in color with no rough edges.

There is a painstaking process of weaving that occurs when the feathers are carefully hand-sewn into the tight raffia base. This ensures that your headdress will open to its full bloom, but also be able to be closed again in case it ever needs to be stored. Our Juju headdresses are sold free of all insects. You may have heard a need to put headdresses in the freezer to avoid an infestation of eggs, however, we need not make this suggestion as we guarantee that our headdresses are of the highest quality.

Large: approximate size 30″ inches in diameter – $450

The Juju feather headdress looks amazing when hung as a three dimensional art piece over a fireplace or over a bed. As a textural pop of color, a headdress can bring your room to life!
With each headdress purchased, we will enclose information on how to hang and care for your headdress.

Due to the handmade nature of each piece, some variation in color does occur. If you would like photos of in-stock pieces to ensure color choice, please contact our Design Associates.

    Product Description

Traditional Use of the Bamileke Feather Headdress

While these gorgeous and striking headdresses have been popping up in interior design throughout North America and Europe in recent years, they are traditionally used as their name suggests, as hats. The Juju Feather Headdress, also known as the Bamileke Headdress, is worn as a hat in special ceremonies in the Bamileke and Kuosi tribal societies.   The use of feathers is significant as birds are culturally important, with feathers representing the beauty of birds as well as the fragility and ethereal nature of life.  These feathers are hand-dyed in small batches and then stitched, again by hand, to a tightly woven basket base that can be tied to the head.  When not in use, the feather headdress can be folded neatly to keep the delicate feathers protected.  See our resource here for information on opening and closing the headdress.

These feather headdresses are traditionally used as hats by ceremonial dancers or by the tribal chief during dramatic masquerading community celebrations that include dance and music. The Tribal Chief, donned in traditional garb, including the feather hat, hides small toys and trinkets in the feathered top and ceremoniously opens the headdress to have these goodies scatter at his feet, to the joy of the children in attendance.

Cameroon, the country of origin of the Juju Feather Headdresses created for African Luxe, is considered Africa in Miniature, offering diversity in climate – from sea to desert, waterfalls to sahara – and in culture with more than 250 distinct ethnic groups representing thousand year old traditions and cultures.  Cameroon should certainly make it on your bucket list of places to see in a lifetime.

In the case of our lighting, each piece is punctured by hand, without the use of stencils, so slight variations do occur. We believe that these variations enhance the product, making them truly unique and one-of-a-kind.
